Māori flag meaning
The Māori flag symbolizes indigenous heritage, featuring a striking design with black, red, and white representing unity and identity. Hiraina Marsden, Jan Dobson and Linda Munn designed the Tino rangatiratanga flag in 1989.
The elements of the Tino rangatiratanga flag represents three realms:
- Te Korekore, the void (black, top) represents the potential being and the space beyond the world of every experience. The colour symbolises the darkness from which the earth appeared from. It also represents Rangi, the heaven, floating, a passive force.
- Te Ao Marama (white and centre) represents the realm of being and world of light. It symbolises the physical world, the harmony and purity, the balance.
- Te Whai Ao (red) represents coming into being and life, Papatūānuku and the earth mother. It also symbolises the land and active forces.
- The koru symbolises the unfolding an renewal of life and hope for the future.
The flag and umbrella should always be flown with the black section at the top and the red section at the bottom.
